Bobs- What Should I Ask For?

We understand that sometimes it can be hard to tell your stylist what you’re looking for. While photo references are great, these key words can help make sure that you and your stylist are on the same page! This week, we are looking at some popular Bob hairstyles. The Bob, which was popularized in the 1920’s, is a versatile haircut that can be worn in many different ways. Read on to learn how to ask for your perfect bob!

French Bob by Aurora P.

French Bob

The french bob (also known as the classic bob) is characterized by bangs with chin-lenth hair that gently hugs the face, accentuate the cheekbones and create a french-chic style sillouhette. Here’s how to ask for this haircut:

“I’d like a chin length bob, with no layers, and bangs. I’d like to see the length uniform all around.”

While this style can be cut on both straight and curly hair, the key to this bob is smooth, effortless styling. Your stylist may ask if you’d like blunt bangs or side swept bangs.

Round Bob by Lindsay B.

Round Bob

The round bob is similar to the classic bob in that it hugs the cheekbones, however this particular style has round layers cut into it to allow for even more movement in styling. Here’s how to ask for this cut:

“I’d like a chin length bob, with rounded layers in the back, keeping the overall length uniform. I’d like to be able to style it both curly and straight.”

This bob is perfect for playing with the shape of your bangs- curtain bangs, side swept or blunt would all look perfect with this cut. See the images below for different stylings of a Round Bob.

Angled Bob by Brianna C.

Angled Bob

The key to an angled bob is the slight change in length from back to front. You can see in the photo above that the back is slightly shorter and more “angled” than the front of the haircut. This style can be paired with layers or cut like the photo above at a uniform length. Here’s how you ask for this haircut:

“I’d like an angled bob that is slightly shorter in the back and longer in the front. I’d like the back of my hair to be slightly beveled when styling it.”

This cut works well by playing with many different lengths and you can increase the angle at which it is cut for very dramatic effects.

Long Bob by Brianna C.

LOB (Long Bob)

A lob is exactly what it sounds like! A long bob. This is a great option for those looking to “go shorter”- without going too short. This style works great on both straight and curly hair and is one of the most versatile, flattering cuts out there. This is how you ask for this cut:

“I’d like a long bob, uniform in length, with the length falling near my shoulders. I’d like to be able to style it curly or straight”

Your stylist may ask you questions about how you’d like your bangs. Face framing looks great on this cut. See the photos below for more ways to style a LOB.

Curly Bob by Lindsay B.

Curly Bob

Did you know bobs are a fantastic option for naturally curly hair? Having less weight on the hair allows for curls to “pop” up into their most structured form. A curly bob is defined by using the natural curls to create a bouncy, rounded shape. Here’s how you ask for this cut:

“I’d like to have a bob that accents my curl pattern. I’d like to have layering throughout to give a more voluminous shape.”

The proper products will be so important to keeping this bob looking fresh. Use light hold curl products to keep those curls in shape.

Overall, there are many different types of bobs to choose from. By using this lingo and sharing these photos with your stylist, you’ll be on the path to the bob of your dreams!
